Winter drive

Winter drive

The annual winter drive aims to raise funds to contribute to a charitable cause during the cold Johannesburg winter months. To raise funds for the initiative this year, the CSR team hosted a “pay-to-play” games night for the Johannesburg office. All office members contributed by paying a fee to participate in tournaments of table tennis, 30 Seconds, Mario Kart and poker. It was a great success!

This year, the team wanted to choose a beneficiary for whom we felt it was possible to make a tangible difference. House Thandi, founded in 2004, is a facility in Benoni that serves as a satellite home for infants who are abandoned by their parents or removed from their care due to abuse or neglect. The centre houses 12 babies up to three years of age. House Thandi provides physical safety, medical care and emotional stability to these babies while social workers assess their situations and search for permanent homes. House Thandi received funding from a state subsidy but relies on donations to fund its operations.

The funds raised by the Johannesburg office were used for our first donation to House Thandi. A onesie and blanket was purchased for each child, with the remaining budget going towards nappies. On the 10th of June, a team from the Johannesburg office delivered the items to House Thandi. They were met by Stienie Oberholzer, the house mother, who expressed gratitude on behalf of the home. The team spent a few hours playing with the children and learning about the home.

We learned that while clothing and personal items can be passed down to younger babies as the older ones grow out of them, the home is constantly struggling to replenish its stock of consumable goods. Stienie explained that consumable goods, such as tinned food and baby formula, are of immense value to the home and that nappies “are like gold”.  Asking the people who run House Thandi about what they need helped to establish how future donations can make the most impact.
